Stern View of Two Rowboats, England
Winslow Homer, American, 1836–1910 · 1881

Winslow Homer's watercolor study captures a beach scene with two small boats and figures, rendered in his characteristic economical style. Homer, primarily known for his oil paintings and illustrations, used watercolor throughout his career to explore light, atmosphere, and maritime subjects. This work demonstrates the artist's interest in coastal life and his ability to suggest narrative through minimal compositional means—two boats, a few human presences, and the vast expanse of beach and sky. Created during a period when Homer was increasingly turning to watercolor as a primary medium, the work shows his evolving approach to capturing the quotidian details of working life along the English coast.
