Fishermen in Oilskins, Cullercoats, England

Winslow Homer's charcoal and chalk study captures a group of fishermen gathered on wet ground before the Tynemouth volunteer life brigade house. Rendered in loose, atmospheric marks, the figures wear heavy oilskins and face toward the rough sea beyond. Homer spent 1881–1882 in Cullercoats, Northumberland, sketching the working lives of local fishermen and lifesavers. These drawings and watercolors from his English sojourn marked a decisive turn toward maritime subjects and tonal realism, moving away from his earlier Civil War reportage. The work demonstrates Homer's interest in capturing transient effects of weather and light while recording the dignity of labor in harsh coastal conditions.
