Two Schooners and Dories

Winslow Homer's pen-and-ink maritime studies capture the working vessels of nineteenth-century American waters. The three sketches—a larger schooner under full sail, a smaller two-masted ship, and a single dory—demonstrate Homer's careful observation of nautical design and rigging. These drawings reflect the artist's broader interest in maritime labor and seafaring life, themes that occupied much of his career. Such studies served as preparatory work for his paintings and illustrated journalism, allowing him to work out compositional and technical problems before committing them to larger canvases.
