Girl Standing on a Swing
Winslow Homer, American, 1836–1910 · 1879

Winslow Homer's ink sketch captures a young girl balanced precariously on a rope swing, suspended between two trees. The composition emphasizes vertical lines and open space, with minimal background detail. Homer's loose, economical linework—evident in the swing ropes and trunk outlines—conveys movement and immediacy. This drawing exemplifies the illustrator's approach to American leisure and childhood subjects during the Gilded Age. Homer's graphic vocabulary, developed through decades of magazine and newspaper illustration, would influence emerging visual narratives in popular print. His ability to suggest narrative and emotion through spare, confident draftsmanship represents the foundational techniques that later shaped sequential art and comics.
