Winslow Homer's charcoal drawing captures a coastal estuary with dramatic atmospheric conditions. Dark storm clouds mass overhead while lighter clouds break across the middle distance, creating tonal depth. A distant fortification or structure marks the far shore. The composition emphasizes atmospheric effects through varied graphite work—heavy darks in the upper sky contrasting with luminous whites in the cloud breaks, while the lower register shows the water's surface and rocky foreground rendered in mottled grays and blacks. Homer executed this study during his two-year residence in Cullercoats, a fishing village in northeast England (1881–1882), where he developed his mature style depicting maritime subjects and working-class labor.
