Study of Siena Cathedral
Walter Shirlaw, American, b. Scotland, 1838–1909 · 1872

Walter Shirlaw's architectural study captures the interior of Siena Cathedral with precise draftsmanship and watercolor notation. The drawing documents the Gothic structure's soaring vaults, decorative striping, and ornamental details with annotations marking colors and materials. Shirlaw's technique—combining ink line work with selective washes of blue, red, and gold—reveals the working method of late nineteenth-century artists who traveled to study European monuments. Such studies served both as personal records and reference material for large-scale salon paintings, exemplifying the academic tradition of architectural tourism that shaped American art training in the post-Civil War era.
