Studies of Sheep
Walter Shirlaw, American, b. Scotland, 1838–1909 · c. 1875

Walter Shirlaw's ink sketches capture sheep in various poses and angles—grazing, standing, and moving. The artist employs quick, economical line work to suggest form and musculature, prioritizing anatomical observation over detail. Such studies from life were fundamental to academic training in the nineteenth century, allowing artists to understand animal structure for larger compositions. Shirlaw, a Scottish-born American painter and founding member of the Society of American Artists, regularly practiced this type of working sketch as preparation for studio works and as an end in itself.
