Nature Study
Walter Shirlaw, American, b. Scotland, 1838–1909 · 1875

Walter Shirlaw's pen-and-ink study depicts grasses and flowering plants rendered with precise botanical observation. The composition scatters specimens across the page—some clustered in dense groupings, others isolated—creating a naturalist's working sheet rather than a formal arrangement. Shirlaw's controlled line work captures delicate stem structures and seed heads with the accuracy of a field study. This drawing reflects the nineteenth-century artist's practice of accumulating visual research from nature, establishing a reference library for studio work. Such studies formed the foundation of academic training and remained central to artistic practice throughout Shirlaw's career as a painter and founding faculty member of the Art Students League in New York.
