Decorative Design
Walter Shirlaw, American, b. Scotland, 1838–1909 · 1875

Walter Shirlaw's etching demonstrates the ornamental vocabulary of late-nineteenth-century design. A framing oval encloses three winged putti suspended in atmospheric space, while a solitary cherub stands below—a compositional arrangement derived from Renaissance precedent. The work exemplifies the decorative etching tradition that dominated American and European printmaking before the rise of comic strip illustration. Shirlaw's technical mastery of line and tonal gradation reflects academic training, establishing visual conventions—spatial framing, figure grouping, narrative suggestion—that would inform the emerging language of sequential art in the newspaper pages of the following decades.
