The Appeal

This ink sketch by Walter Shirlaw depicts a courtroom scene centered on a single dramatic moment—a figure addressing the bench while others observe from the gallery. Though predating the formal newspaper comic strip by two decades, such satirical and narrative illustration work established visual conventions that would define early comics: sequential storytelling, character focus, and the use of dense linework to model form and direct viewer attention.
