Study of a Woman
Walter Shirlaw, American, b. Scotland, 1838–1909 · circa 1875

Walter Shirlaw's figure study demonstrates the academic training that shaped late-nineteenth-century American art. The drawing captures a woman in a reclining pose, rendered through fluid pen strokes and selective shading that define form without complete detail. Shirlaw, a Scottish-born painter who became influential in American art education, employed such studies as foundational exercises. The abbreviated treatment of drapery and the focus on anatomical structure reflect studio practice—sketches made from live models to sharpen observational skill and compositional understanding before executing finished paintings.
