Studies of Two Left Hands
Walter Shirlaw, American, b. Scotland, 1838–1909 · 1875

Walter Shirlaw's anatomical study captures two distinct poses of the left hand in pen and ink, demonstrating the careful observation required of academic artists in the nineteenth century. Such studies were foundational to art training, allowing artists to understand skeletal structure, musculature, and gesture before applying these forms to larger compositions. Shirlaw, a Scottish-born painter who became a leading figure in American art education, relied on this methodical approach throughout his career as both a muralist and instructor. The sketch's economy of line and attention to volumetric form reveal the practiced hand of an accomplished draftsman.
