Two Cheyenne Youth

Walter Shirlaw's watercolor study captures two figures in period dress rendered with loose, gestural brushwork. The left figure, seated and holding what appears to be a pipe or ceremonial object, wears a red patterned garment over white leggings. At right, a standing study shows similar clothing in red and blue tones. Shirlaw, a Scottish-born American artist trained in European academic traditions, often worked from observation and ethnographic interest. These sketches demonstrate the rapid notation technique artists employed for character studies and costume research—methods that would inform the visual shorthand and figure work essential to emerging comic illustration traditions of the following decades.
