Study of the Head and Arms of a Figure

Walter Shirlaw's preparatory drawing demonstrates the academic training that shaped American art in the late nineteenth century. Working in charcoal and chalk on tan paper, Shirlaw studied the human figure with anatomical precision—the tensed neck, the raised arm, the modeling of facial features in profile. Such studies were foundational exercises, working drawings made before larger compositions. Shirlaw, born in Scotland and trained in Europe, brought Continental methods to American art education, teaching at the Pennsylvania Academy and later the Art Students League in New York, where he influenced generations of illustrators and fine artists.
