Motif for Pediment Design

Walter Shirlaw, American, b. Scotland, 1838–1909 · 1875

Motif for Pediment Design
Walter Shirlaw's architectural sketch presents a dense classical composition crowded beneath a triangular pediment. Multiple figures—putti, draped attendants, and allegorical forms—interweave across the shallow space, their bodies twisted in dynamic poses. Heavy ink work defines musculature and fabric folds while lighter pen work establishes spatial relationships. This study demonstrates the artist's engagement with Beaux-Arts design principles governing monumental public buildings of the Gilded Age. Shirlaw, trained in Scotland and Europe before establishing himself in America, translated Renaissance and classical precedent into designs for institutional architecture, balancing anatomical precision with decorative rhythm.
