Nude Study

Walter Shirlaw, American, b. Scotland, 1838–1909 · 1875

Nude Study
Walter Shirlaw's anatomical sketch exemplifies the academic training fundamental to 19th-century art education. This profile study of a female figure demonstrates the classical approach to understanding human form through careful observation of proportion, musculature, and spatial relationships. Such drawings served as essential preparatory work for painters and sculptors, establishing foundational skills before undertaking large-scale compositions. Shirlaw, a Scottish-born American artist, participated in this tradition while helping establish American art institutions, including teaching at the Art Students League in New York. Academic nudes formed the backbone of formal artistic practice, bridging Renaissance ideals with contemporary studio practice during a period when photography was beginning to challenge traditional methods of figure study.
