Francis Augustus Lathrop's careful pen study of praying or clasped hands demonstrates the anatomical precision demanded of late-nineteenth-century illustrators. Working in an era before photographic reference became standard, artists developed through sustained observation the ability to render human gesture with conviction. Lathrop's cross-hatching technique creates volume and shadow, the hands emerging from drapery with dimensional weight.
