Sketch of Bust of a Woman

Francis Augustus Lathrop's pen sketch depicts a classical female bust rendered with assured line work and tonal shading. The figure wears draped fabric across her shoulders and a decorative headpiece, her gaze directed downward in contemplative repose. Lathrop (1849–1909) was an accomplished American designer and illustrator whose work bridged decorative arts and fine drawing. This study demonstrates the academic tradition of portraiture through simplified sculptural form, using economical ink lines to suggest volume and fabric texture.
