Study of a Foot

Francis Augustus Lathrop's anatomical study demonstrates the careful observation required of late-nineteenth-century illustrators. Working in charcoal on paper, Lathrop captured the musculature and structure of a human foot in profile—foundational work for artists who would soon define the visual vocabulary of sequential narrative.
