Drapery Study
Francis Augustus Lathrop, American, 1849–1909 · circa 1895

This pencil sketch by Francis Augustus Lathrop demonstrates the foundational draftsmanship underlying late nineteenth-century illustration. The careful rendering of fabric folds and movement reflects academic training in figure drawing—essential preparation for the commercial illustration work that would define American newspapers. Such studies were routine practice for artists producing the satirical and narrative drawings that populated Sunday supplements and dailies, the visual precursors to modern sequential art. Lathrop's attention to drapery's sculptural qualities shows how illustrators developed the technical facility required to convey action, emotion, and spatial depth across multiple panels and pages.
