Figure Study
This ink sketch on paper demonstrates the academic practice of figure drawing from the 1890s. The study captures a seated female form rendered with economical linework—quick gestural marks defining musculature and pose. Such studies formed the foundation of artistic training in the late nineteenth century, teaching artists proportion, anatomical structure, and the mechanics of the human body in motion and repose. These foundational practices would directly inform the visual techniques emerging in newspaper comics and illustration of the subsequent decade, where artists like Richard Outcault and Winsor McCay would translate similar anatomical knowledge into the expressive, dynamic figures that defined early comic strip characters.
