Figure Studies

These preliminary sketches by Francis Augustus Lathrop document the artist's working process during the formative years of American comic illustration. The loose pen studies explore figure poses, gestures, and groupings—the foundational vocabulary from which narrative sequences would emerge. Such working drawings reveal how turn-of-the-century illustrators developed the visual shorthand that would define newspaper comics: simplified anatomy, dynamic postures, and spatial arrangement that could convey action and emotion across sequential panels.
