Francis Augustus Lathrop's allegorical composition draws on Greco-Roman imagery to explore themes of labor, rest, and human activity. The relief-like arrangement of figures across horizontal registers—a reclining worker, standing attendants, and smaller supporting figures—recalls classical friezes while employing the narrative sequencing that would define sequential art.
