Study of Angels
Francis Augustus Lathrop, American, 1849–1909 · circa 1895

This pen sketch explores classical religious imagery through dynamic figural composition. The central winged figure dominates the composition with raised arms, flanked by two attendant angels rendered in fluid, gestural linework. The artist experiments with movement and drapery, using repeated curved lines to suggest fabric and motion. The layered sketching—visible in both finished and preliminary marks—reveals the working method of late-nineteenth-century academic artists preparing studies for monumental works or decorative schemes. The spiritual subject matter and allegorical treatment reflect the period's continued investment in historical and religious themes, even as modernist movements began reshaping artistic practice.
