Baptism of Christ

Francis Augustus Lathrop, American, 1849–1909 · 1895

Baptism of Christ
Francis Augustus Lathrop's watercolor depicts a religious narrative across an irregularly shaped composition, characteristic of late nineteenth-century decorative arts. The scene shows two central figures in water beneath an arched opening, with witnesses arranged in groups—some robed, others simply dressed—observing from banks and terraces. A dove descends from a luminous sky above. Lathrop employs soft washes of blue and green to model the landscape and water, with earth tones and reds in the figures' garments. The asymmetrical, interlocking composition reflects Art Nouveau influences and the period's interest in mural and architectural decoration. This work exemplifies the shift toward symbolic and narrative religious imagery prevalent in American painting during the 1890s.
