Mill House by a Stream

Francis Augustus Lathrop, American, 1849–1909 · 1895

Mill House by a Stream
Francis Augustus Lathrop's pencil sketch depicts a fortified mill structure with characteristic architectural details: a peaked roof, multiple windows, and stone foundation. The composition employs atmospheric shading to suggest depth and environmental context, with vegetation and trees rendered in loose graphite strokes. The arched stone bridge or aqueduct to the right anchors the structure within a landscape setting. Lathrop, a prolific American artist and designer active in the late nineteenth century, worked across multiple media including illustration, decorative arts, and painting. This sketch exemplifies the observational drawing practices that informed both fine art and commercial illustration during the period.
