Francis Augustus Lathrop's sketch captures three figures—a portly man in a hat, a thin conductor or attendant, and a sleeping passenger—rendered in quick pen strokes with selective wash. Though predating the newspaper comic strip's full development by decades, such observational figure studies share visual DNA with the sequential art to come: economical line work, character types defined through posture and costume, and narrative potential within a single frame.
