Study for 'Zodiac'

Francis Augustus Lathrop's preparatory sketch explores a circular composition populated with classical figures and allegorical forms. The dense arrangement of intertwined bodies, rendered in pen and ink with gestural hatching, demonstrates the artist's process of organizing complex narrative or symbolic content within a bounded frame. Lathrop (1849–1909) worked across decorative arts, mural design, and illustration during the late nineteenth century, employing classical vocabularies and compositional density typical of Beaux-Arts training. This study reveals how artists of the period developed ambitious designs through iterative drawing before execution in final media.
