Figure Study

Francis Augustus Lathrop's pen sketch demonstrates the anatomical observation that underlay American illustration in the 1890s. Though rendered as loose figure studies rather than finished comic narrative, such drawings established conventions later central to sequential art: gestural line work, economical form, and attention to human movement and proportion. Lathrop worked as a decorative artist and illustrator during the emergence of the newspaper comic strip—a period when artists across print media developed visual strategies for depicting action and character that would become foundational to the medium's visual language.
