Half Dome, Yosemite

Thomas Moran's watercolor depicts the monumental granite formation of Half Dome rising above Yosemite Valley's coniferous forest. Working in the tradition of Hudson River School landscape painting, Moran employs atmospheric perspective to suggest vast depth—foreground rocks and snow give way to tall pines, which recede into misty valley walls. The artist's bold handling of the central peak, rendered in dark washes against lighter surroundings, creates dramatic spatial recession.
