Thomas Moran's dramatic landscape study captures the Grand Tetons through bold tonal contrasts of ink wash and pencil. A towering dark tree anchors the foreground while distant peaks recede into atmospheric haze. Moran, British-born and working in America, pioneered the romantic landscape tradition that dominated 19th-century art. His detailed observational drawings, made during expeditions West, informed monumental paintings exhibited nationwide. Working in both oil and watercolor, Moran helped establish landscape as a major artistic genre and influenced how Americans visualized their natural frontiers.
