Clouds over the Catskills

Frederic Edwin Church's oil sketch captures atmospheric study over the Catskill Mountains. Church, a leading figure of the Hudson River School, devoted considerable attention to cloud formations and meteorological effects. This work demonstrates his empirical approach to landscape painting—the artist sketched directly from nature, recording specific conditions of light and weather.
