Waves

This sketch by Frederic Edwin Church captures the artist's close study of water in motion. Church, a leading Hudson River School painter, filled numerous notebooks with observational drawings of natural phenomena—clouds, mountains, and here, the dynamic action of waves. Rather than a finished composition, this rapid pen study served as visual research, exploring how line and gesture could convey the restless energy of the sea. Such working drawings were essential to Church's process, allowing him to understand landscape elements before translating them into monumental oil paintings that defined American landscape art in the nineteenth century.
