Road in the Woods, Mexico

Frederic Edwin Church, the pre-eminent American landscape painter of the nineteenth century, sketched this woodland scene during travels in Mexico. Church's rapid pencil studies capture atmospheric effects and topographic detail with economy of line. Working from nature, he rendered foliage, rocky terrain, and sparse vegetation with gestural marks that suggest rather than describe.
