Mountains and an Evergreen, Mexico

Frederic Edwin Church (American, 1826–1900) was a master of landscape painting and among the first American artists to document Mexico's dramatic terrain. This sketch captures a towering conifer overlooking distant mountains—typical of Church's working method. The artist made rapid pencil studies during travels to establish compositions and atmospheric effects before executing finished paintings in his studio. Church's meticulous observation of geological forms and light shaped the Hudson River School's visual language. His Mexican subjects, rendered with precise topographical detail, expanded American audiences' understanding of continental geography and established the exotic landscape as a subject worthy of fine art attention.
