Horseshoe Falls from the Canadian Side, Niagara Falls, Canada
Frederic Edwin Church's pencil sketch captures Niagara Falls with the careful observation of the Hudson River School tradition. Church visited the site multiple times to study its dramatic geology and shifting light conditions. His annotations—identifying rock formations, water movement, and atmospheric effects—reveal the artist's working method: on-site notation that would inform finished compositions. Church's drawings of Niagara became source material for large-scale paintings that established the Falls as a quintessential American landscape subject. The sketch demonstrates how nineteenth-century landscape painters used direct study to achieve both geological accuracy and sublime grandeur.
