Architectural Sketches

Frederic Edwin Church's rapid pen studies explore structural forms and spatial relationships. The sketches—an arched arcade, pitched-roof buildings, a domed tower with spire, and geometric studies—demonstrate the visual thinking of a landscape painter concerned with how architectural elements organize space and light. Church traveled extensively throughout the Americas, sketching constantly to gather compositional ideas for his monumental canvases. These spare, gestural drawings reveal his method: breaking complex structures into essential lines, testing proportions, and considering how forms interact. Such working sketches were fundamental to nineteenth-century artistic practice, enabling artists to think through problems of composition and perspective before committing to finished works.
