Figure and Amphora from the Museum at Athens, Greece

Frederic Edwin Church's sketch documents classical Greek artifacts during his travels. The drawing combines two studies: a terracotta figure at top, rendered with quick hatching, and below it a Greek amphora with characteristic spiral handles and bulbous body. Church's economical line work captures the vessel's form while annotation identifies the source. This type of field study was central to nineteenth-century artistic practice, allowing American artists to engage directly with ancient Mediterranean culture and refine their understanding of historical form and proportion.
