Study of Tomb Decorations, Museum of Athens

Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826–1900 · 1869

Study of Tomb Decorations, Museum of Athens
Frederic Edwin Church's architectural sketch documents ornamental details from ancient Greek funerary monuments in the Athens museum collection. The drawing combines precise observation with interpretive rendering: a central decorative urn with scrolled handles and naturalistic foliage ornament sits elevated on a plinth, accompanied by two circular studies showing front and profile views. Church's linear style and careful attention to form reflect the nineteenth-century artist's role as both documenting observer and careful student of classical design. Such sketches served dual purposes—recording museum holdings while providing compositional reference material for studio work.
