Frederic Edwin Church's pencil and white gouache study captures a mountainous Ecuadorian valley with a winding river, executed during his South American travels. Church, a leading Hudson River School painter, journeyed through Colombia and Ecuador in 1853–1854, producing numerous landscape sketches that synthesized geological observation with romantic composition. This work demonstrates his characteristic approach to topographical study: precise delineation of rocky outcrops and vegetation alongside atmospheric effects.
