Pichincha at Morning from the Hill of the Temple of the Sun, Quito, Ecuador
Frederic Edwin Church's pencil sketch captures the volcanic landscape of Ecuador's Pichincha peak at dawn. Rendered in Church's characteristic precise linework, the drawing documents the dramatic terrain and atmospheric conditions the Hudson River School painter encountered during his South American travels. The sketch served as visual research for Church's larger finished compositions, demonstrating the artist's practice of direct observation from nature. Church's South American journeys (1853–1856) produced numerous such studies, which he later synthesized into monumental canvases that brought equatorial geography to North American audiences during an era of expanding scientific and artistic interest in the continent's natural wonders.
