The Illinizas, Ecuador
Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826–1900 · 1857

Frederic Edwin Church sketched the twin peaks of the Illinizas during his travels through Ecuador, capturing the dramatic volcanic landscape with precise geological observation. Working in graphite and wash, Church rendered the snow-capped summits and deeply eroded flanks with the topographic accuracy that defined his approach to landscape. His handwritten notes record details of formation and appearance, reflecting the artist's practice of gathering visual data for later studio compositions. Church's South American journeys produced hundreds of such field studies, which he synthesized into monumental paintings that brought distant, exotic geographies to American audiences during the mid-nineteenth century.
