The Iceberg, Canada

Frederic Edwin Church's sketch depicts a dramatic Arctic landscape with towering icebergs flanking a narrow passage of water. A small sailing vessel provides scale against the monumental frozen forms, their jagged peaks and stratified surfaces rendered in precise pen work. Church, a leading figure of the Hudson River School, traveled to Newfoundland in 1859 to study glacial formations firsthand.
