Frederic Edwin Church's study of Arctic ice presents five distinct formations across two horizontal registers. The larger sketches—rendered in white gouache over brown paper—show icebergs at rest and tilted, their surfaces modeled to suggest weight and sculptural complexity. The smaller notations at top establish scale and variety. Church, a leading Hudson River School painter, traveled to Newfoundland in summer 1859 to gather material for his monumental *Icebergs*, exhibited the following year. These field studies demonstrate his empirical approach: direct observation translated into gestural notation that would inform his finished compositions. The work reflects nineteenth-century Romantic interest in sublime natural phenomena and exotic geography.
