Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826–1900 This landscape study captures a pristine alpine lake ringed by dense forest, with a small herd of deer grazing along the near shore. Church renders the water in luminous greens and blues, its surface broken by patches of aquatic vegetation, while the distant treeline rises in dark, atmospheric tones.
