Frederic Edwin Church's oil sketches capture icebergs observed off Newfoundland and Labrador during his 1859 Arctic voyage. The composition presents three studies in varying scales: a monumental iceberg dominates the upper register, its cream and white masses contrasting sharply against dark waters and brooding sky, while a vein of turquoise ice catches light at its base. Two smaller bergs occupy the lower half, rendered with similar attention to the play of luminosity across glacial forms. Church's expeditionary approach—traveling to remote sites to study nature directly—informed his grand landscape practice, translating field observations into iconic paintings of American wilderness and geological drama.
