Mt. Katahdin from Katahdin Lake, Maine

Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826–1900 · 1876

Mt. Katahdin from Katahdin Lake, Maine
Frederic Edwin Church captures Maine's highest peak across a glacial lake, its volcanic cone rising through mist and cloud. The composition—water in foreground, wooded shoreline, distant mountain—follows the landscape conventions Church perfected during decades painting American wilderness. Church's oil studies from nature, executed with precise observation of atmosphere and light, influenced generations of American landscape painters and shaped how the nation visualized its own geography. This work documents both a specific place and the artistic vocabulary through which nineteenth-century viewers understood the American natural world.
