Sketch of the Sky

Frederic Edwin Church's oil sketch captures a luminous atmosphere where sky dominates the composition. Horizontal bands of color—deep blues and purples above, warm yellows and ochres below—create atmospheric depth through subtle gradation. The thin dark line marking the horizon divides earth from heaven. Church developed such studies as research for larger paintings, working rapidly to record transient light effects.
