Clouds over Mountain Peaks

Frederic Edwin Church's rapid landscape study captures a dramatic alpine vista with characteristic romantic sensibility. Executed in graphite and watercolor wash on tan paper, the sketch demonstrates Church's method of quick notation—mountains rendered with gestural hatching, clouds suggested through reserved paper and soft pigment. Annotations in the artist's hand indicate his attention to atmospheric effects and color values. Church's Hudson River School practice relied on such field studies, later developed into monumental salon paintings.
