Temple of Apollo in Corinth, Greece

Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826–1900 · 1869

Temple of Apollo in Corinth, Greece
Frederic Edwin Church's oil study captures the ruins of Corinth's ancient Doric temple bathed in dramatic golden and crimson light. Church, a leading Hudson River School painter, traveled extensively through Europe and the Mediterranean, sketching classical sites to understand their form and atmosphere. This compositional study demonstrates his method: bold gestural brushwork establishes the landscape's geological strata and architectural masses, while luminous washes of red and ochre evoke the site's historical weight and the quality of Mediterranean light. Church's approach to landscape—combining geological precision with romantic atmosphere—influenced how American artists visualized both natural majesty and human civilization's place within it.
